The Black Women Entrepreneurs (BWE) initiative aims to empower Black women in Canada by providing resources, mentorship, and opportunities to establish and grow their businesses. By addressing systemic barriers, the program supports Black women entrepreneurs in achieving financial independence, leadership growth, and sustainable business success.
How We’re Doing It – Detailed Plans
Workshops and Training: Host regular workshops focusing on business skills such as leadership, marketing, accounting, bookkeeping, and funding opportunities.
Mentorship Program: Pair participants with successful business leaders and entrepreneurs who guide them through strategic planning, overcoming challenges, and scaling their businesses.
Access to Resources: Provide curated resources, including toolkits, templates, and guides for incorporating businesses, navigating tax obligations, and managing finances.
Networking Opportunities: Organize events that allow Black women entrepreneurs to connect, share experiences, and collaborate on business ventures.
Collaborations: Partner with financial institutions, legal firms, and business consultants to offer expert advice and support.
Involvement of Employees and Volunteers
Employees:
Program coordinators oversee operations, partnerships, and scheduling.
Administrative staff support logistics, communications, and reporting.
Volunteers:
Business professionals serve as mentors.
Community advocates and stakeholders help with outreach and participant selection.
Beneficiaries and Selection Process
Beneficiaries:
Black women entrepreneurs, particularly those in underserved or underrepresented communities.
Women seeking to start or grow a business, regardless of industry.
Frequency and Length of the Activity
Frequency: Workshops and training sessions are held monthly. Mentorship matches are for a minimum of 6 months, with regular check-ins. Networking events occur quarterly.
Duration: Workshops last 1–2 hours. Mentorship sessions are flexible based on participant needs.
Any Fees Charged?
The BWE program is free to participants to ensure accessibility for Black women who may face financial barriers.
How You Maintain Direction and Control Over Activities and Resources
Oversight:
Managed by the FEI leadership team, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
Regular evaluations to assess program outcomes and adjust strategies as needed.
Budgeting:
Funds are allocated based on a detailed budget plan, monitored quarterly.
Partner contributions are tracked to ensure efficient resource utilization.

Intermediaries:
Collaborate with Dexteritas.ca and The Africa Centre to reach a wider audience.
Partnerships with financial institutions, business consultants, and legal professionals provide specialized support.
Location(s) of Activity: The program operates nationally, with key hubs in Edmonton, Calgary, and virtual platforms, allowing participation from across Canada.
