On September 17th, 2024, the Financial Empowerment Initiative (FEI) hosted a powerful session as part of its Leadership and Entrepreneurship Evenings, focusing on Fund Development and Advocacy for Black-Focused Non-Profit Organizations. The event brought together over 45 attendees who were eager to learn strategies for strengthening their organizations through effective fundraising and advocacy.
MLA Sharif Haji led the discussion, providing valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities Black-led non-profits face in securing funding. He emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships and advocacy efforts in gaining visibility and support for these organizations. He stressed you can do your own grant writing, you do not need to hire a grant writer.
Among the distinguished attendees was Nneka Otogbolu, the COO of the Foundation for Black Communities (FFBC), who shared her expertise on grant applications. She provided key tips on how organizations can stand out when applying for grants, including the need for clear objectives, measurable outcomes, and a compelling narrative that ties into community impact.
The session also saw participation from Sam Juru, Executive Director of the Africa Centre and in attendance were Funke Olokude of the Ribbon Rouge Foundation, and Emmanuel Onah of the African-Canadian Civic Engagement Council (ACCEC). The FEI is grateful to every leader who showed up including Mrs Yinka Oladele and Alhaji Ahmad Sanni. Each leader shared their experiences in advocating for Black communities and offered practical advice on how to navigate funding challenges.
This session was a vital platform for Black-focused non-profits to gain insights, network with key figures in the community, and explore innovative ways to secure funding and sustain their operations.
The Financial Empowerment Initiative continues to support and empower Black-led organizations through meaningful workshops and initiatives designed to foster growth and resilience.
